Interview with Toronto Black and White Photographer Paulo Carvalho aka @the10minus4

The Tdot Shots Five Questions Interview series profiles Toronto area photographers

Who are you ?

They call me Paulo since 1976, and in the words of Fernando Pessoa : “If after I die, people want to write my biography, there is nothing simpler. They only need two dates: the date of my birth and the date of my death. Between one and another, every day is mine.”
Fernando Pessoa, Poems of Fernando Pessoa

How did you get started with photography?

Thirty five years ago I took my first picture with my father’s Asahi Pentax 35 mm SLR. I still remember that picture. He passed away a few years ago, with six thousand kilometers of ocean between us. He is present in every single picture I took or I will take. More than teach me how to take pictures (which clearly I didn’t learn properly) he taught me how to look at the shadows and find light.

What do you like to shoot and where?

I like to shoot in the city… any city … in search of a line of a poem hidden in the shadow of an object. Sometimes there’s a person who doesn’t know she will be there forever.

What gear do you use ?

Sony a7ii

Who are your favourite photographers?

@ansireal @isabelnolascophotography
@mr.brianjames
@krhaggith
